No trip to New York would be complete without a trip to the theatre. Broadway is the natural home, not just of New York theatre, but of theatre in the United States. A Broadway show comes with all the guarantees of a high quality production and as well as attracting eager theatre goers, attracts the best performers, directors, writers, and producers to the world of theatre.

Broadway refers to the longest and oldest avenue in Manhattan, stretching the full length of the famous New York borough. Passing through Union Square, Madison, Square, and Times Square it is the most visited tourist attraction in the city. It is in the midtown section of Broadway, between 42nd and 53rd streets, that plays host to the theatre district. Termed the 'Great White Way' the area was one of the first in the US to have electric lighting and to have your name in lights on Broadway is as much an honor today as it ever was.

Broadway theatre generally refers to performances in one of the 39 theatres located in the theatre district with a capacity greater than 500 seats. The annual celebration of the best within these theatres is recognized with the Tony Awards each June. There are of course many more theatres with more intimate settings and some 100 'Off Broadway' theatre shows, the term given to theatre away from the main Broadway theatre district.

Off Broadway shows may be no less appealing than On Broadway spectaculars and some of the most successful productions begin life Off Broadway before enjoying continued success on one of the more famous Broadway theatres.

The history of Broadway theatre is long and illustrious but the golden age was certainly the rise of Vaudeville and Burlesque at the beginning of the 20th century. After a period of decline Broadway theatre experienced a renaissance in the 1980s with the advent of the mega musicals such as Cats, the Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, and has been flourishing ever since with both musical theatre and dramatic productions. Large scale Disney productions have also become popular.

It is easy to fit the theatre into any length of stay in New York and to combine a Broadway day or evening into an overall New York Experience. Although performance schedules vary, in general open ended theatre runs have 8 shows per week. The evening shows start at 8pm most nights but some may begin at 7pm, particular on a Tuesday evening. Matinee shows start at 2pm and are on Wednesdays and Saturdays with a Sunday show generally at the later time of 3pm. Broadway theatres are closed on Mondays. Price and availability of tickets can vary according to the specific show, seating plan, the times of the show, and season.

Musical plays tend to have longer runs than straight plays, with the Phantom of the Opera, now in its 20th year, holding the record for its length of run. Most successful plays do tend to have long runs so whenever you're travelling to New York tickets are generally available, especially if you are prepared to be flexible in times and dates.

In addition to Broadway and off Broadway shows, New York has a great many other theatres and venues in which a range of musical, dramatic, and comedy performances are on show. Greenwich Village and the Lower West Side in particular have a very strong avante garde theatre tradition. Whether you are looking for the latest blockbuster musical or a contemporary take on the dramatic arts, New York Broadway ticket services will find you the best seat in the house.
